When you think of Oman, you probably imagine vast sand dunes, palm-lined valleys, and centuries-old forts. But there’s another surprise waiting for you, just beyond the bustle of the capital, Muscat: the Daymaniyat Islands. This uninhabited group of islands boasts white sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters, turtles, and fish in the most remarkable colours. A piece of tropical paradise right in the heart of the Gulf of Oman – a perfect spot for nature lovers!

The Unique Daymaniyat Islands

About 40 kilometres northwest of Muscat lies a group of nine small islands: the Daymaniyat Islands (also known as Dimaniyat). This archipelago is a protected nature reserve and is often described as one of the finest snorkeling and diving spots in the Middle East. Despite regular visits by tourists, the islands remain relatively tranquil. The Daymaniyat Islands offer a welcome change of scenery during a road trip through Oman. After days in the desert or mountains, a day on the water feels like pure indulgence. Thanks to their convenient location near the capital, this excursion is perfect either at the start or as a finale to your journey.

Snorkeling with Turtles in Oman

The Daymaniyat Islands are uninhabited and surrounded by crystal-clear blue waters. What you’ll see can vary each time, but there’s a good chance of spotting turtles and small reef sharks. The turtles are fairly accustomed to humans, allowing for close-up views while snorkelling or diving. As with all marine life, always keep a respectful distance and never touch them. With a bit of luck, you might even encounter a playful group of dolphins or a massive whale shark (in the right season). For those who prefer to stay dry, you can enjoy the scenery from the boat, go birdwatching, or take a short walk on one of the islands.

Excursion to the Daymaniyat Islands

Most tours depart from Al Mouj Marina or Marina Bandar Al Rowdha in Muscat. This depends on the provider, so check carefully. From the marina, it takes around 40–50 minutes by speedboat to reach the islands. The journey itself is already worth it: Muscat’s skyline on one side, the turquoise ocean on the other. Follow the guide into the water or explore on your own. Between snorkelling sessions, a hearty lunch is served on the boat (think hummus, falafel, fruit). The excursion lasts about half a day, typically 4.5–5 hours. Morning departures are around 08:00, while afternoon tours start around 13:30. Morning tours are busier because the sea is calmer and marine life is more active. If you’re planning a visit to the Daymaniyat Islands, keep these tips in mind:

Book well in advance:Tours to the Daymaniyat Islands are popular, so it’s recommended to plan a few days ahead. If you know when booking that you want to join this excursion, let us know and we can include it in your reservations.

Visit in the right season:Between 1 May and 31 October, landing on the beaches is not allowed due to turtle nesting season. Snorkelling is still permitted during this period.

Useful items to bring:Water, snacks, snorkelling gear, and often lunch are included in the tour. Bring your own towel, reef-safe sunscreen, swimwear, a reusable water bottle, and a hat. A UV-protective shirt can provide extra sun protection. For safety, put everything in a waterproof bag (drybag).

Transport to the marina:If you’re travelling without a rental car, excursion providers can offer hotel pick-up for a small additional fee. Alternatively, taxis are a convenient option; both marinas are easily accessible.

Camping on theDaymaniyat Islands

If a half-day on the Daymaniyat Islands isn’t enough, there’s good news: overnight stays are possible. Enjoy a unique camping experience, visiting various snorkelling spots and islands, before sailing to your overnight location in the afternoon. Around 18:30, a delicious BBQ dinner is served.

Watch the sunset and marvel at the stunning starry sky! Note that you will sleep in a tent, with all camping equipment provided. The next morning, enjoy a relaxed breakfast without other tourist boats nearby. You can even take one last refreshing swim or snorkel in the bay before sailing back to the marina around midday.
