The Grand Canyon of Oman

Oman is a land full of surprises, from vast deserts to colourful markets and historic forts. One of the most impressive places is without a doubt Jebel Shams, the highest mountain range in Oman. Because of its enormous gorge, it is often compared to the famous Grand Canyon in the United States. So lace up your hiking boots, because the Balcony Walk is an unforgettable experience.

Jebel Shams: the highest mountain in Oman

Planning a round trip through Oman? Then Jebel Shams, the Mountain of the Sun, should not be missed. Located in the Hajar Mountains, it rises to over 3,000 metres above sea level. From the top, you are rewarded with spectacular views of a dramatic landscape of deep gorges, rugged mountains and winding wadis. It almost feels as if you are walking on another planet, or have stepped straight into a science fiction film.

One of the highlights of the area is the Balcony Walk: an ancient donkey trail that follows the edge of the canyon and leads to an abandoned mountain village.

The Balcony Walk - an unforgettable hike

This is one of the most beautiful hiking routes in Oman and an absolute must for anyone who wants to experience the impressive gorge of Jebel Shams up close. This 8-kilometre walk (around 3 hours return) follows a well-marked trail along the edge of Wadi Ghul, the “Grand Canyon of Oman”.

The Balcony Walk is not particularly difficult, but in places the path runs close to the edge of the cliff. If you suffer from a fear of heights, this hike can be quite challenging. The trail gently descends towards the abandoned village of Sab Bani Khamis. Along the way, you will encounter plenty of friendly goats. On the return journey, you climb back up again, with a total elevation gain of around 250–300 metres.

Make the most of this unique experience with these tips:

  • Start early, around 8:00 am, to avoid the heat. Alternatively, choose a late afternoon hike after 3:00 pm, when much of the trail is in the shade. Temperatures can easily rise above 30°C.

  • Good hiking shoes are essential.

  • Apply plenty of sunscreen, as there is little shade along the route unless you walk later in the day. Light clothing, or shorts and a T-shirt, are perfectly suitable for the Balcony Walk.

  • Bring several litres of water and some snacks. There are no facilities along the way, only at the start of the hike. At the car park you may find small stalls and paid toilets, but these are often still closed early in the morning.

  • Visiting Jebel Shams with a rental car? Avoid parking under trees. Goats are more than happy to use your car as a stepping stone to reach the leaves.

Travelling to Jebel Shams, Oman

Although Jebel Shams is fairly remote, it is easily accessible by car. Most travellers start their journey to Jebel Shams from the city of Nizwa, which is about a 2.5-hour drive away. The drive itself is already an adventure, taking you through an impressive mountain landscape with winding roads and steep climbs.

The final section of the route is unpaved and can be a little uncomfortable, but in dry conditions it is still manageable with a regular car. That said, travelling to Jebel Shams in a 4×4 vehicle is highly recommended. If you prefer not to drive yourself, a car with a driver is a comfortable and safe alternative.
