5 highlights and insider tips
Nestled between Oman’s desert plains and rugged mountain landscapes lies Nizwa, a city that may seem calm at first glance, yet is rich in stories. For centuries, Nizwa was the religious and intellectual heart of the country, and that legacy is still very much alive today. Narrow alleyways, an imposing fort, and a lively market filled with colours and scents bring the past vividly into the present.
Nizwa is safe, compact and well organised, while also offering plenty of culture and a touch of adventure. Below you will find the most interesting sights and experiences to make your visit to Nizwa truly unforgettable.

Visit the impressive Nizwa Fort
Nizwa Fort is impossible to miss. Quite literally. Its massive round tower rises above the city and immediately draws the eye. From the outside it already looks impressive, but be sure to take the time to explore the interior as well. It is not only the city’s most recognisable landmark, but also one of the best-preserved forts in Oman.
Originally built to keep enemies at bay, it now mainly attracts curious travellers. Inside, you wander through former living quarters, storage rooms and dark staircases that easily transport you back several centuries. The route through the fort is clearly marked and supported by informative panels. From the top level, you are rewarded with wonderful views over the surrounding mountains and the palm oasis below.
Did you know? The fort’s defence system did not rely solely on swords and bows. Boiling hot date oil was also used as a rather effective defensive weapon.
Stroll through the atmospheric souk
Right next to the fort you’ll find Nizwa’s souk, a traditional market where local life is still very much alive. Unlike the bustling bazaars in some other countries, the atmosphere here is relaxed and unhurried. You’ll discover fragrant spices, handcrafted silver jewellery, pottery and fresh dates, displayed in small stalls beneath arches of wood and stone.
The souk is compact and partly covered, making it pleasant to visit even on warmer days. Take your time to wander around, chat with vendors or sample some local produce. A small bag of dried limes or a handmade bowl makes for a lovely souvenir.
Tip: Visit in the morning, when it’s still cool and locals come to do their daily shopping.

Eexperience the Friday Livestock Market
If you’re in Nizwa on a Friday morning, the livestock market is a must-see. This unique tradition has been held for centuries. Early in the morning, farmers from the surrounding areas gather with their animals for a lively auction. The spectacle starts around 7:00 AM; men in traditional robes showcase their goats and sheep while potential buyers watch and negotiate.
It’s a kind of organised chaos, full of shouting, laughter, and handshakes, offering a glimpse into a centuries-old trading spirit. Even if you don’t buy anything, experiencing the market is a memorable highlight of your visit!
Relax and Savour Omani Hospitality
In Nizwa, you’ll find several restaurants where you can explore the local cuisine, often set in a charming atmosphere. Think slow-cooked meats like shuwa, fragrant rice dishes, and sweet cardamom-infused halwa.
Many accommodations feature a rooftop terrace or courtyard where you can unwind with a cup of Omani coffee after a day full of sights. The ambience is warm and welcoming, and the pace is pleasantly relaxed.
Tip: The historic centre of Nizwa is perfect for strolling. Wander through its atmospheric streets and make a stop at Anat Café, a cosy spot for a coffee break.
Jabrin Castle & Bahla Fort
Looking for a taste of history just outside Nizwa? Both Bahla Fort and Jabrin Castle are about a 30-minute drive away and can easily be visited in one day. Bahla Fort is grand and robust, with thick walls, courtyards, and viewpoints that invite endless exploration. It’s no wonder it’s listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Jabrin Castle, on the other hand, is more refined, featuring elaborately decorated ceilings, hidden staircases, and historic living quarters, offering a fascinating glimpse into the life of Oman’s elite. Two very different forts, yet equally impressive!
Tip: Another delightful outing is the mountain village of Misfat Al Abriyeen, about an hour from Nizwa. It feels like stepping into another world, with narrow alleyways, traditional mud houses, and lush gardens. Follow the marked walking path along the edge of the village for beautiful views and quiet spots to rest.
